We often hear from parents that their children treasure their summers at Hitchcock Center’s Nature Summer Camp. For many, camp is a formative childhood experience. We think all children should have this opportunity.
Joey (not his real name) was an 8-year old who loved learning – especially about science and nature – but he rarely got opportunities for enrichment. A recipient of free breakfast and lunch at school, he lived in subsidized housing with his baby brother, his mother and her boyfriend, and was often supplied by his school’s ‘extras’ closet. Joey’s guidance counselor thought he would benefit from Hitchcock’s Scholarship Fund and the opportunity to be a part of Nature Summer Camp – and she was right!
Joey attended our Ew, That’s Gross! week about insects, mud and muck. He had an unforgettable week catching pond creatures, making slime, and learning about the invertebrates he found while investigating decaying logs.
Thanks to the donors who contributed to Hitchcock’s Summer Camp Scholarship Fund, we were able to bring Joey to camp on a full scholarship. Each year we depend on donations from individuals to fuel our summer campers’ natural curiosity on these memorable summer days. Joey wants to be a scientist when he grows up – we just might see him back as one of our future interns.
